The Baldwin Mobile Aquatic Club was established in 1993 by Coach Terry Martin. The newly formed USA Swiming team swam outdoors at the Fly Creek pool in Fairhope, Alabama.
At that time there were no indoor pools in the area and no USA Swim teams. So in 1996 Coach Martin built two indoor pools with financial help from Mr. Robert Martin (Terry's father), Mr. Dan Wilkins (Catherine Wilkin's father) and Dr. Lynn Groome (Kirsten Groome's father).
Coach Martin, who has since retired, brought the sport of swimming to the Eastern Shore. He put the BMAC 'Geckos' on the 'swimming map' by producing an American record holder, many national champions, national record holders and many Regional and State champions.
*Four of Coach Martin's past swimmers will be competing at the 2008 Olympic Trials which is quite an accomplishment for this small area*
Under the guidance of Coach Martin, the club branched out and began to offer Swimming lessons for all ages, Tri-athlete training, Master's swimming, Lap swimming, High School swimming and Summer League swimming. This has led the Baldwin Mobile Aquatic Club to be the premiere swim school in the region.
Coach Martin still teaches private stroke lessons and helps out with the Bluewave Summer League team but he has now handed the reigns of the USA Swim team over to several very capable people. The USA swim team is now run by the Eastern Shore Parents Association Foundation and the new 'Geckos' Head Coach is Coach Rich Suhs.
